One Billion Rising Victoria Update

October 18th, 2013

Friends, out team of 2013 OBR organizers, Victoria Women’s Sexual Assault Centre, Victoria Women’s Transition House and Island Sexual Health Society, met recently to talk about One Billion Rising 2014. We were thrilled with the turnout and energy of last years event! Unfortunately, as non-profits with limited resources and critical programs to run, we have decided we simply do not have the resources to host the event again in 2014.

The Victoria Community showed great passion for the event and we are hopeful folks will step forward to organize a local event for the coming year.

To see what is happening in with events in our region and beyond and to get more details about updates and plans for 2014, please visit http://www.onebillionrising.org/

We encourage folks to post links on the Victoria Rising facebook page to any local event planned or to any facebook pages or events in the next week or two. We will be shutting down the page on November 1.

Many thanks!

Thank You Maria’s Cucina Team!

September 9th, 2013

Maria’s Cucina was busy this weekend preparing 10 days of meals for our Shelter during our upcoming flooring renovations. We are so thankful for their generous donation of time, talent and nutritious food – these delicious hot meals will go a long way to making the women and children staying with us feel cared for during their stay!

We extend warm thanks to Maria Manna and her terrific volunteer team of chefs, Sysco Foods, Country Grocer, Church of the Advent, and Esquimalt Mayor Barb Desjardins. Pictured here are Maria’s Cucina volunteers: Maria Manna, Kathleen Gilbert, Dar Jmayoff, Monika Josok, Connie McConnell, Amanda McGregor, Tianna Metzger, Carilynn Nicholson, Cathy Scott.

12 Meals for 12 Days – Done!

August 22nd, 2013

UPDATE: We extend  warm thanks Reed Pope Law Firm,  the Soroptimists and Maria “Maria’s Cucina” Manna for supplying meals for 12 days during our flooring renos!

Can you help us ensure the women and children staying with us have access to a hot meal during our upcoming shelter renovation?

Transition House was delighted to receive a generous capital grant from BC Housing to replace our 20+ year old floors in our shelter. Work is scheduled for mid -September and during the period from September 9-20 we will have limited use of our kitchen for preparing meals for residents. Can you help us by providing a ready to eat meal for our shelter guests during one (or more) of these 12 days?

What we need:

Ready to eat meals for 4-12 residents, women and children ( we can confirm exact numbers the day before) Meals such as pizza or any other takeout/ready to eat food you might normally pick up  from a restaurant or deli such as hearty salads, Greek food, lasagna etc. (Items that are not too spicy are  preferred as food may be shared with young children)

We welcome local restaurants or your church, club, workplace or community group to donate prepared food such as a casserole and green salad.

Gift Cards for local restaurants that we can use for takeout.

We can arrange pick up and we are happy to answer any other questions. If you can help or would like more information, please contact Theresa at theresan@vwth.bc.ca or 250-592-2927 ext. 210.

Warm thanks for your support!

Volunteers Wanted!

August 19th, 2013
Are you interested in getting involved with a great organization helping women and children in our community?
Transition House is recruiting volunteers! Our deadline for applications for the fall is coming up and there are lots of meaningful opportunities to support our mission including working the crisis line (training spots are filling up fast), cooking meals at the shelter, helping at events and group volunteer projects like painting or house improvements.
Volunteer training  will be offered on Monday evenings 6:30-9:30 starting the 24th of September. The in-house and office volunteer training is 5 sessions.  We don’t meet on the stat holidays. Prospective volunteers are encouraged to apply early as this training fills up fast.

There will be additional  trainings offered for in-house and community office volunteers this fall – date and times to be determined by the numbers and availability of applicants, so we continuously  accept that volunteer applications for these roles.

For more info contact our volunteer coordinator Dianne de Champlain at dianned@vwth.bc.ca

Thank You Victoria Golf Club!

July 15th, 2013

The Victoria Golf Club Links to Change Charity Tournament is the single biggest annual fundraiser for the Victoria Women’s Transition House, raising more than $700,000 over the past 11 years. This past weekend, the 12th Annual Tournament hosted hundreds of golfers and once again raised tens of thousands of dollars for our mission – supporting the cost of meals at the shelter, sponsoring children for our summer camp, paying for bus passes for women using our services and much more. We extend our warmest gratitude to the wonderful volunteer planning committee at the Victoria Golf Club and to Presenting Sponsor Bayview Place for making the safety and well being of women and children in our community a priority. Thank You!

Honour someone you love.

In conjunction with the Victoria Golf Club events, we invite you to support the Links to Change Caring Calendar. Honour a special event or person in your life by buying a day on the calendar for $50. Celebrate your friend’s birthday, honour your sister’s anniversary or remember a loved one who has passed away by making a donation on their behalf. Your donation helps to provide a day of meals for women and their children at the shelter, a group counselling session, or a day at summer camp for children who have witnessed abuse. The calendar will be available at all of the upcoming Victoria Golf Club events or you can make a donation by following this link.

2013 Children Who Witness Abuse Summer Camp is underway!

July 8th, 2013

One in four women in Canada experience abuse from their partner and 80% of these incidents are witnessed by children. Without proper support and understanding, these children often find themselves isolated, unable to maintain healthy relationships and at risk of growing up to repeat patterns of abuse as adults.

At our Children Who Witness Abuse Summer Camp, children ages 4 to 17 have a unique opportunity to connect with their peers, reducing the isolation associated with being exposed to violence and abuse in their homes. In this setting, children are empowered to better identify and express their feelings, set and assert boundaries, as well as safely try out new communication skills. Building self-confidence and trust in a safe and supportive environment is key– all while having a whole heap of fun at exciting and engaging activities throughout Victoria in the afternoons!

We are thankful to have received tremendous support and dedication from the following community partners which has allowed us to offer this important and unique program for free to children in our community this summer.
