An Evening with Nahid Sewell  – Friday, September 15th – 5pm to 7pm

August 14th, 2017

Join VWTH and supporters at the Victoria Golf Club for a book reading and presentation from Nahid Sewell, author of “The Ruby Tear Catcher”.

There will be wine and nibbles, a Q & A period following the reading and discussion, as well as a silent auction and door prizes.

In her words:
“Though I risked homeland to write this book, I’d hoped to transport readers to Persia, the land of blue-tiled mosques, saffron rice and kabob and bazaars filled with merchants selling anything from spices to Persian rugs. I wanted to share the beauty of my culture and the warmth of my people. But I also wanted to expose how poorly women are treated in the Middle East and help empower women and girls. Using the tear catcher as a symbol, I draw parallels between Christianity and Islam. My hope is for readers to understand that we are all the same and should embrace, not discriminate against those who don’t fit our mold. Most importantly, I want to give a voice to my sisters in the Middle East.” – Nahid Sewell

Tickets to the event can be purchased from the Victoria Golf Club and copies of “The Ruby Tear Catcher” may be purchase from VWTH by calling Emily at 250-592-2927 ext 213 or e-mailing emilyc@vwth.bc.ca.

VWTH Compassionate Pet Boarding Program

July 7th, 2017

Victoria Women’s Transition House (VWTH) is excited to launch a Compassionate Pet Boarding Program for the pets of women and children fleeing domestic violence and abuse. While we know that there is a link between domestic abuse and animal abuse, VWTH does not have the means to house companion animals at our Emergency Shelter. This leaves many women facing the difficult decision to either leave their pets behind or remain in the abusive environment. Sadly, many victims stay in an abusive home for fear of subjecting their pets to continued abuse, if left behind. Equally disturbing, animals are often left with their abusers to face torture or even death.

Women in an abusive home with pets may not leave their abuser because:

  1. They often cannot take their pet into a shelter with them and their children and;
  2. They worry for their pet’s safety if they proceed to a shelter and leave their pet in an abusive home.

Knowing a woman’s concern for the pet, an abusive partner may use this against her – threatening or abusing the animal directly.

VWTH wants to eliminate as many barriers as possible to help women to make change in their lives and to leave an abusive partner. To help with this, we want to launch the VWTH Compassionate Pet Boarding Program in partnership with our local SPCA.

To support this initiative, you can make an online donation or call our Community Office at 250.592.2927.

Shirley Runs for Transition House

May 23rd, 2017

Shirley_GoddessRun

Come join us on Sunday, June 4th as we cheer on Shirley Elm, our Charity Champion at this years’ Victoria Goddess Run!
Read on for Shirley’s inspiring story and to help support her and VWTH, please go to her GoFundMe page.

In Shirley’s words:
“As a member of the Board of Directors for Victoria Women’s Transition House (VWTH), I am honored to run in the Sunday, June 4, 2017 Victoria Goddess Run as a Charity Champion in support of Victoria Women’s Transition House. Over the years, I have been an avid runner but with a cancer diagnosis last year, my running was put on hold. Now that I am in remission, I’m back outside again and putting in the kilometers, slowly but Shirley!

All funds that I raise in support of my run through this Go Fund Me campaign will be directed to Victoria Women’s Transition House, a non-profit organization that for over 40 years has provided emergency shelter, counselling, supports and services for women of all ages, with and without children, fleeing domestic abuse. As a person who began life in the foster care system, I have experienced first-hand how chaos within family homes can have a hugely detrimental effect on one’s life. I was lucky enough to eventually be adopted by a wonderful Canadian family, but am aware that all are not as fortunate.

I am also extremely glad that this year, the Victoria Goddess Run will support the BC Cancer Foundation. After spending a lot of time in the cancer clinics both here in Victoria and in Vancouver, I know how this disease cuts cruelly across all parts of our population, and how devastating this can be to families.

These days, as a school Principal in the Saanich School District, I do my best to create and maintain communities where everyone belongs. I am a strong supporter for equality, especially within relationships, and I do my best to equip students with the attitudes and dispositions that will help them navigate this increasingly complex world. I also strive to be a reasonable and loving parent to my own daughter by giving her the confidence to stand up for what is right.

I have a passion for helping people face life’s problems and am proud to be part of the Transition House Board of Directors. Working with Transition House, my daughter and I know that we can make a difference in the lives of women and children in our community impacted by domestic violence and abuse. Please join me in support of the important work done by Victoria Women’s Transition House on behalf of vulnerable individuals in our community.”
