MP NATHAN CULLEN JOINS MISSION TRANSITION, RAISING FUNDS FOR VWTH

October 1st, 2012

We extend warm thanks to Member of Parliament and Opposition House Leader Nathan Cullen for drawing attention to domestic and relationship violence prevention as part of his participation in the Victoria GoodLife Fitness Marathon on October 7. Mr. Cullen has pledged to raise funds for VWTH as part of his run.

“Transition Houses for women escaping domestic violence are sadly far too well used in communities across BC and Canada,” said Mr. Cullen, MP for the sprawling northernwest riding of Skeena-Bulkley-Valley.

“ I welcome the pledge program as a way for me to support and raise awareness for this issue that affects all of us directly and indirectly.”“Physical or sexual violence has touched the lives of more than 50% of women over 16 in Canada; women are 13 times more likely to be assaulted at home than on the street. We have to work together to stop violence and make home a safe place for women and children.”

Says VWTH Executive Director Makenna Rielly, “We were delighted when Mr. Cullen contacted us to voice his support and his intent to run for our cause. As an elected representative and Opposition House Leader, we greatly appreciate his significant influence and ability to draw attention to the need to prevent domestic violence and support the women and children who are survivors of abuse.

“The voices of both men and women are needed and welcome as we call to protect the rights of women and children to live free of abuse in their homes.”

It’s not too late to join Mission:Transition as part of your run on October 7. Contact Penny Dunlop at pennyd@vwth.bc.ca or 250-592-2927 ext 213 for details.

SOUP SISTERS – WARMING HEARTS

September 25th, 2012

I attended my first Soup Sisters event yesterday at London Chef. This volunteer led organization, with locations across the country, invites participants to sign up each month and participate in a soup making evening which benefits Victoria Women’s Transition House. Last night about 18 participants shared the chopping, stirring and simmering and at the end of the night, 150-200 servings of soup were stored in containers and then delivered to our shelter and Harrison Place today where the soup is frozen and used as needed (which is fairly often). The soup is used to feed children staying at the Shelter at lunchtime and often women, after a long day of appointments and juggling all the tasks of rebuilding a life, turn to it for sustenance as well.

What a great initiative this is – soup is a practical and meaningful way to share nurturing and caring for the women who use our shelter and it’s also a great event for your team, book club or birthday celebration. The cost of enrollment goes directly to the ingredients, tools and space for the evening – everything is supplied including a light dinner with soup , salad and wine to wrap up the evening. For more information on how to get involved as a volunteer or to sign up for a soup making evening, visit www.soupsisters.org.
