Basic Training is a 4 session program plus a two hour orientation and shelter tour, that provides an overview of the issue of abuse, a history of VWTH and its philosophy, the impact of abuse. This training will prepare volunteers to take 3 hour shifts at the shelter, our third stage housing program, or to help out with events, fundraising and our Christmas Hamper Program. We ask that volunteers complete 100 hours of volunteering with VWTH after training is finished.

Once accepted into the training all Volunteers are required to apply online for a Criminal Record Check (CRC) specific to VWTH. We are unable to accept CRC’s completed for other organizations unless they are shared through the program with Ministry of Justice.

This is a two hour session scheduled at the end of basic training.  It prepares volunteers for volunteering at the shelter and includes safety, boundaries, shelter rules, preparation for working with children. Shadow shifts are scheduled. These are scheduled after each basic training.

Crisis Line training is offered to current volunteers that have completed the basic training, in-house training and a minimum of 35 hours volunteering with VWTH. Crisis line training is held over a 9 week period for a total of 27 hours. This training will prepare volunteers to take 4 hours shifts on the Crisis Line at the Shelter. We ask that volunteers complete a total of 150 hours on the Crisis Line with VWTH after the training.
