Christmas is Coming – will you sponsor a hamper?

Monday, November 18th, 2013

Christmas is just around the corner and for many of us this is an exciting time of year; a time when we can enjoy the company of our families and friends. For some though, Christmas can be a time of worry.

Many of our clients, women who have bravely begun taking steps to live free of their abusive or violent relationships, are sadly among those who have little to look forward to this Christmas. Their first Christmas alone, often with limited financial resources can be a challenging time especially for those with children.

Thanks to thoughtful contributions from our community, the Christmas Hamper Program continues to be an incredible display of generosity and kindness. Last year, friends, families and co-workers came together to create and distribute over 100 personalized Christmas Hampers for women and children in our community, yet some recipients were left unmatched. Will you consider Making Spirits Bright this Christmas by sponsoring a hamper? Click here to sign-up online!

One Billion Rising Victoria Update

Friday, October 18th, 2013

Friends, out team of 2013 OBR organizers, Victoria Women’s Sexual Assault Centre, Victoria Women’s Transition House and Island Sexual Health Society, met recently to talk about One Billion Rising 2014. We were thrilled with the turnout and energy of last years event! Unfortunately, as non-profits with limited resources and critical programs to run, we have decided we simply do not have the resources to host the event again in 2014.

The Victoria Community showed great passion for the event and we are hopeful folks will step forward to organize a local event for the coming year.

To see what is happening in with events in our region and beyond and to get more details about updates and plans for 2014, please visit http://www.onebillionrising.org/

We encourage folks to post links on the Victoria Rising facebook page to any local event planned or to any facebook pages or events in the next week or two. We will be shutting down the page on November 1.

Many thanks!

Thank You Maria’s Cucina Team!

Monday, September 9th, 2013

Maria’s Cucina was busy this weekend preparing 10 days of meals for our Shelter during our upcoming flooring renovations. We are so thankful for their generous donation of time, talent and nutritious food – these delicious hot meals will go a long way to making the women and children staying with us feel cared for during their stay!

We extend warm thanks to Maria Manna and her terrific volunteer team of chefs, Sysco Foods, Country Grocer, Church of the Advent, and Esquimalt Mayor Barb Desjardins. Pictured here are Maria’s Cucina volunteers: Maria Manna, Kathleen Gilbert, Dar Jmayoff, Monika Josok, Connie McConnell, Amanda McGregor, Tianna Metzger, Carilynn Nicholson, Cathy Scott.

12 Meals for 12 Days – Done!

Thursday, August 22nd, 2013

UPDATE: We extend  warm thanks Reed Pope Law Firm,  the Soroptimists and Maria “Maria’s Cucina” Manna for supplying meals for 12 days during our flooring renos!

Can you help us ensure the women and children staying with us have access to a hot meal during our upcoming shelter renovation?

Transition House was delighted to receive a generous capital grant from BC Housing to replace our 20+ year old floors in our shelter. Work is scheduled for mid -September and during the period from September 9-20 we will have limited use of our kitchen for preparing meals for residents. Can you help us by providing a ready to eat meal for our shelter guests during one (or more) of these 12 days?

What we need:

Ready to eat meals for 4-12 residents, women and children ( we can confirm exact numbers the day before) Meals such as pizza or any other takeout/ready to eat food you might normally pick up  from a restaurant or deli such as hearty salads, Greek food, lasagna etc. (Items that are not too spicy are  preferred as food may be shared with young children)

We welcome local restaurants or your church, club, workplace or community group to donate prepared food such as a casserole and green salad.

Gift Cards for local restaurants that we can use for takeout.

We can arrange pick up and we are happy to answer any other questions. If you can help or would like more information, please contact Theresa at theresan@vwth.bc.ca or 250-592-2927 ext. 210.

Warm thanks for your support!
